There has been a lot of talk in the media, internet and celebrity magazines lately about Juice Cleanses. All saying detox this, detox that and it will “reset” your body. But does it actually and is it even worthy of being called a detox? Before you consider a juice diet please read my thoughts below. And i’l throw other shake diets into this also because they don’t want you eating real food either!!
Now before we start I want you to know that there are many very healthy people out there who regularly drink fruit and veg juices, I would include my clients in this as I get them to drink veg juices. But i’m not talking about people who use juices as a supplement but rather people who are on a complete juice diet and hoping to see radical health and body changes. The ones the magazines and ads reel in hook, line and sinker! But are these fads slowing down your metabolism and causing a massive rebound weight gain?
Many of these juice diets are clever marketing ploys to make you believe that a few weeks of this will make everything 100% . They will then have their own brand which they tell you contains every nutrient known to man. But did you know many of them contain a high amount of fructose, a form of sugar? That’s why they taste so good and this is the reason people thing these crazy fad diets actually work because the drinks taste nice but the reason they are losing weight is because it’s an extremely calorie restricted diet.
Ok so lets help you understand this a little better – you need protein, fats and carbs to survive and thrive ( you can actually survive without carbs but that’s too in depth for this article!) These juice diets are extremely low in protein and fats, both of which are essential. What actually happens on these diets is a loss in muscle and water weight and not a whole lot of fat – people see a big drop on the scales and think bingo i’m making so much progress and this is the best thing ever.
There is nothing really groundbreaking out there guys, there really isn’t. Don’t get me wrong, designing a food plan for people is an art but you wouldn’t believe how simple it has to be and this is why our clients do so well. The food plans on our online transformation programme are the same – simple but effective. Why? Because we know what your body needs to function optimally – protein, fats and carbs eaten at the right times.
ProFitness Ireland is at a stage where I could hand on heart say that many of our clients understand nutrition better than many fitness professionals out there. Why? Because we started with the basics (yes hard at times) and made it easy for them to understand. Sure there is time to eat some “not so healthy” food but when you and your body understand that this is strategic timing these foods then you are on a one way ticket to better health and getting n better shape!
Simply put if you want to get in better shape and you have looked into these shake or juice diets then STOP and rethink. Il lay this out so simply for you that you cannot fail. Do these 5 things consistently (every day) and you will laugh(in your bikini) at everybody who told you to do it to lose weight a few months previously!
1. Increase your protein intake
2. Increase your fibre intake
3. Add in some healthy Organic Fats
4. Eat 1 different piece of fruit every day (ones you have never eaten before)
5. Eat good carbs in your post training meal
